Polyphasic sleep does not mix with a hectic vacationstyle weekend full of eating out and walking. I switched to a tweaked Everyman schedule, and ought to be back on Uberman by wednesday. 22 hour days will kill off all those festival calories instantly. Oh, my internet is still fucked.
Hectic weekend. Now on an actual day off I'm going to be busy househunting for a better place. Goals: cheap, utilities included, no crackhouses nearby, sane landlord, cats and smoking allowed, and no neighbors complaining about my being awake all day. Yeah, this will take a lot of work.

I am one of the featured zombies on the eleven oclock news, staggering like a mixture between HST and Uncle Bernie.
Huge walk, tallahassee showedup and fought zombies alongside the l4d crew. Zombie furries and brides. Several people identified me as Hunter S Thompson. Now I'm at a gourmet candy store eating crickets
Much bigger crowd of zombies than last week, sweet.
Work, zombie walk, and family. This day is going to be busy, and I will bite anyone who disturbs a nap.
Everyone's asleep. I'm juggling onions and umbrellas to pass the time.
Future brother in law woke me 5 minutes early. I bit him. You do not interrupt a man's nap.
Family came up to visit, skewing naps to accommodate them.

Friday, July 9, 2010

Just took a nap. I discovered that you can weave a lucid dream from scratch: no sensation of actually sleeping, you cross the threshold invisibly. The hard part is in not thinking that the dream background noise is real, then you get woken when you switch to listening to the real background noise.
Sometime in the night I found myself working on formulating a thermodynamics of contrafactuals.
Wee morning loneliness and introspection. I need to convince others to go polyphasic. Something about the eternity of the nightcycles makes you feel a need for conversation. It occurs to me that I have been single for 2 years now.
After this nap I feel fine again. I'll have to figure out how to get a nap during a heatwave.
I gave myself an extra chance to nap. Now this gets interesting : I just laid breathing, felt body relax, and when I got up twenty minutes later the headache was gone. vanished. Along with any grogginess. iirc PureDoxyk never said how effective one nap could be, only on Everyman that 6 hours has the same effect on the immune response as a monophaser's sick crash.

Thursday, July 8, 2010

Woke from eleven nap normally. A little groggy, but I think I went through REM faster, waking in a little deeper sleep than usual. Headache reduced too.
Still have a pounding headache, but no signs of sleepdep. I don't feel tired, no urge to nap early pre 11pm nap.
Terrible headache but still no tiredness or signs of flow becoming harder. An odd state to be in.
This day has already stretched into ridiculous lengths. Still no tiredness, but this won't last.
Yet another nap ruined by the heat. i'm going to pay for this later in the form of three full cycles of weariness. Fuck you, sun. Enjoy it now before we engineer you away.
I made a spreadsheet which tracks your naps, computes zombie mode downtime, and lets you calculate the optimal schedule. Would be fun to also create one which applies the Formula to automatically generate a gradual adaptation schedule stabilizing under availability constraints.
Nice, my 7am nap felt like hours.
Man this heat is screwing me up. for the past several cycles it not only took longer to fall asleep(ten minutes feels like an hour, also) but I've been waking earlier, drenched in sweat. Luckily the sleep I am getting is enough, but I have to be going on at most 1.5 hours a day since the fifth. I've created a spreadsheet to keep track starting today.

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

I'll post on this later when my local internet returns. I have augmented my modified Uberman schedule with an equiphasic micronap schedule spaced every 6 hours. So at 1, 3, 7, 11, 2, and 11 I take full 20ish minute naps. At 2, 8, 2, 8, I allow myself ten minute naps if I can. This prevents any monophasic tendencies, provides more flexibility, and also gives me an idea of how efficiently I'm sleeping: I can have full dreams in these micronaps. This isn't SPAMAYL, and is not for people who still have zombie mode.
I'm using the cat's belly to hold a book open
I'm going warwalking this cycle. Guide me oh linksys muse.
Woke with pins and needles and numbness in arms and legs from sleeping in such a strange position. Will do it more often, though: I'll take pins and needles after a nap to sweating during.
I'm going to nap on the benchpress machine in the basement, the only place in the house not boiling hot
I had a four minute dream nap. I woke at four past one with a strange, vivid dream, then just lay there till the playlist ended. Even more oddly, I feel perfectly refreshed.
I walked outside to take a walk, and found the street full of running cops searching for someone. Life is getting odder.

No zombie mode in days. I am the Lizard King, puny primates. Time dilation seems even stronger, every word I hear sounds carefully enunciated, reflexes definitely faster.
Back, after having discovered no end to the path. For all I know it cuts right through downtown, winding through alleyways and into the abandoned skyscraper. There, underground grizzly boxing and a billion rusty tricycles.
At some point it crosses a four lane highway.
The walk ends at a concrete cliff, part of an old railroad bridge. Below, it continues as if there were no 30 foot drop.
The last few cycles I've been taking long walks. On one now, a bike trail which seems to go everywhere in Buffalo.

Monday, July 5, 2010

I'll have to give it a few days, but I definitely think that having an auxiliary nap schedule of ten minute naps, after the initial hell, does wonders for stabilizing a schedule. It reduces the risk of oversleep, introduces flexibility. Only after you've gotten onto the schedule, though. (Time Warner still hasn't fixed my block, so it may be another day before I can post my long post on what I learned in a month of polyphasic sleep).
Interesting. Once you go onto polyphasic sleep, you can take ten or fifteen minute naps that are easy to wake from naturally, and have the effect of a shot of espresso. Hm, what about creating an auxiliary schedule of micronaps? Maybe it can ease adaptation and provide flexibility. But I think during the first two weeks they would only increase your risk of oversleep.
Today I'm trying an experiment. I've set alarms telling me to nap every hour. I'm then going to see how ease of napping is distributed throughout the day. I think I will only sleep during scheduled naps, but any others will indicate sleep debt and a possible place to tweak.

Euphoria. Reading Timpson's 'quantum information theory and the foundations of quantum mechanics'
Since I have to skip my 2pm nap today, I took one as close as possible to it. Bracket the skewed cycle with extra naps, might work.
The chicken turned out orgasmic. It impregnated every woman in a 2 mile radius. Old men spoke in tongues. Cthulhu briefly woke and licked his chops.
Reading Zee's 'Quantum Field Theory in a nutshell' this cycle. No tiredness at all.
After my nap I popped some chicken into a bag full of olive oil, basalmic vinegar, and spices. Then, removed as much air as possible. This should be ready to cook as soon as I wake from my 7am nap

Saturday, July 3, 2010

Time Warner still hasn't fixed their problem yet, so still no internet on my block. after one month and a day polyphasic, the verdict is in: it rocks. I still have to tweak things a bit to account for the missed 7pm nap. PureDoxyk understates the difficulty of adapting to such a tweaked schedule: you can't take an extra nap or core sleep to get around 8 hours awake. Not possible, in the best case you will have nap clusters and zombie mode every day for two cycles. So, this month I MUST solve this. The experiments will continue, even though they'll prolong my adaptation.
Zombie walk was great, but a little small. Next saturday will be much bigger. No zombie mode at all, actually.
Shambling about now, muttering about brains and Mexico. sleep dep completes the zombie outfit: i'm making zombie mode my bitch.
I'll be at the Buffalo Zombie Walk today, dressed as Zombie Hunter S Thompson. The sincerest form of flattery indeed.
I'll be without the interwebs for a day or two. let's see how long a polyphasic day is without this time~filler.

Got shanghaid by sister and her fiancee, no chance to take eleven or one nap.

Contagious Laugh

Small oversleep and movies

I had an extra nap at 12, which I overslept by half an hour. Got up, put on Equilibrium, and paused it for my next scheduled nap which went well.

The zombie mode lessened over the course of these naps in the 11-3am cycle. I now feel fully recharged, and have been hunting through my movie collection for Where the Buffalo Roam.

Edit 4:58: I haven't found it. It's either mysteriously travelled to a foreign land, buried in the trappings of a curiously sensual nun; or I've lent it out. Be well, Where the Buffalo Roam.

Sent from phone, while at work

Without nap clusters or oversleeps it gets much harder. But this distributed zombie mode does mean the adaptation is kicking in at last properly.

Napbeasts of apocalypse

Oddly, my naps, though very light, still removed much of the mass of the zombie from my back. I am now more Hunter S. Thompson than Jerry Garcia. Considering, though, that both are dead, this is not saying much.

Sent from phone

Terrible shambling zombie mode in BJ's

Sent from phone

Took a nap on the road after chewing some caffeine candy. The zombie is morbidly obese.

#polyphasers cohort on Posterous

I created Polynappers on Posterous in the hopes that my polyphasic cohort there can all sync up and share our experiences in one place.

org.mode to the rescue

I created cycles.org to help me keep track of naps.

The template:

* Week
** 1 am
    ** TODO NAP
** 3 am
    ** TODO NAP
** 7 am
    ** TODO NAP
** 11 am
    ** TODO NAP
** 2 pm
    ** TODO NAP
** 11 pm

Then a little emacs scriptfu can compile the data and pump it to gnuplot, compare weeks, etc.

Simple and just what I want.
